    Responsibilities

     

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    Learn work responsibilities of Meteorologists.

     

    Write plain-language forecasts and TAFs for Stations.

     

    Assist with weather information collection for research purposes.

     

    Assist with weather case study analyses.

     

    Assist with weather application software testing.

     

    Assist with documentation production & distribution.

     

    Perform some research projects.

     

    Give daily briefings toward end of Internship. 

     

    This position requires the intern to work five days each week for eight hours per day. Generally, hours will be during daytime shifts on weekdays, however Interns occasionally will work evenings and night shifts as well as weekends to gain a better understanding of Southwest Airlines’ operation.

    Qualifications

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.

     

    Must be at least 18 years of age.

     

    Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

     

    EDUCATION:

     

    Majoring in Meteorology based undergraduate degree program, including Atmospheric Science.

     

    Minimum sophomore level preferred.

     

    To be eligible must be currently enrolled as a full time student (minimum 12 credit hours).

     

    Maintained 2.5 or above cumulative GPA.

     

    EXPERIENCE:

     

    Completed coursework in synoptic and mesoscale meteorology preferred.

     

    Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

     

    Programming experience, particularly html, java and web is preferred.

    Passion/interest in Meteorology. 

     

    Excellent communication (written and verbal), analytical and organizational skills.

     

    Ability to manage time and multiple tasks effectively.

     

    Customer Service Oriented.

     

    Self-motivated and Energetic.

     

    Team Oriented.

     

    Ability to work equally well alone or with others.

     

    Flexibility to work in a dynamic, fast-paced operational environment.

    TIME COMMITMENT:

     

    Fulltime/40 hours per week. Occasional evening and overnight weekend work schedule may be expected.

     

    Work schedule generally is Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day, with exceptions noted above. 

     

    PAY:

     

    $15.00 per hour + flight privileges

     

    All internship positions are located in Dallas, TX at Southwest Airlines Headquarters.
