    Conducts audits to identify risks and evaluate the effectiveness of operational, financial, compliance and/or technology controls. Responsible for the day-to-day execution of objectives on audit engagements including following the audit program and documenting work steps. Usually works within a Team; however, may be asked to work independently on smaller engagements.



    • Meets established deadlines and schedules, communicating status and obstacles to Lead Auditor. 
    • Identifies key Customer(s)/project contact(s) to understand processes and controls.
    • Develops agendas for Customer interviews and responsible for facilitating interviews with Customers.
    • Understands and is able to communicate internal controls related to financial, operating, technology, and/or compliance risks to determine they are adequate and effectively maintained. 
    • Identifies financial, operational, technology, and/or compliance risks and the associated internal controls related to the process under review and responsible for assisting in the development of a Risk and Controls Matrix.
    • Understands the relevance of risks associated with exceptions and considers the broader implications using industry best practices, prior experience and related Southwest specific knowledge. 
    • Develops effective and clear work papers, and assists with the development of test steps.
    • Understands fraud vulnerabilities in business and technology processes and incorporates into the scope where appropriate. 
    • Adheres to project schedule and deadlines, and identifies and communicates to Lead Auditor the roadblocks to testing.
    • Provides updates to Lead Auditor on the status of projects/audits.
    • Responsible for the accurate and timely communication of observations to Lead Auditor.
    • Develops and effectively communicates feasible, value-added recommendations to identified business risks and assists with drafting audit communication for Officers and Executives.
    • Develops planning, organizing, and problem solving skills, leverages peers’ SWA knowledge of business areas and related systems. 
    • Adapts to and uses different technology applications, systems, and programs to improve the effectiveness of assignments, increase efficiencies, and quickly complete work objectives. 
    • Provides data driven support for deficiencies identified.
    • Statistical Sampling: Assists in the execution of data analytics techniques such as query/test script development, data editing, and data cleansing to provide a valid and comprehensive data set to be analyzed. 
    • Data Extraction: Develops aptitude in interpreting and evaluating data using appropriate statistical methods such as regression and correlation analysis. 
    • Data Analysis: Learning to interpret results from data queries and statistical testing. 
    • Works with direct Leader to construct an appropriate plan of professional development and takes responsibility to ensure that plan is executed.
    • Must be able to meet any physical ability requirements listed on this description.
    • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leaders.



    • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age. 
    • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.


    • Bachelor’s degree required. Preferred degrees include Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Management Information Systems, or other degree and equivalent work experience in Audit.
    • Masters Degree preferred


    • At least 2 years of public accounting or internal audit experience with demonstrated success overseeing audit Teams and assignments required


    • CIA/CISA/CPA/CISSP/CMA/CFE certification preferred.




    • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines.

    • Maintains the Internal Audit Department's high standards of thoroughness, critical thinking, use of judgment, and quality of deliverables.

    Business Acumen

    • Demonstrate the ability to understand complex business processes and related technology to identify the full range of risks. 
    • Familiarity with COSO, COBIT, ISO, ITIL, NIST, and other frameworks as necessary to perform assignments.
    • Develops Southwest and airline expertise. 
    • Maintains an understanding of Internal Audit methodology and applicable audit standards. 



    • Some travel and extended hours are required.
    • Must be able to work under strict time constraints.
    • Must be detail oriented.
    • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines.
