Undergraduate degree hires will enter the Southwest Airlines Technology Department as Associate System Engineers.  Associate System Engineers analyze, design, test, document, and implement systems in accordance with internal business requirements, and organizational standards.


Associate System Engineers also respond to production problems and implement immediate resolution efforts across technology areas.


These individuals partner with other Technology Teams to evaluate and recommend emerging technologies, and influence technical designs.




System Engineering:

  • Learning the technologies and processes used by Southwest Airlines and find means to contribute  to the success in the tasks, projects and programs that are being executed
  • Effectively apply knowledge and skills in computer systems to solve a range of problems
  • Proactively identify problems, perform root cause analysis, investigate information and perform impact analysis; formulate and execute plans to implement solution
  • Conduct or facilitate analysis and design for simple and complex business problems surrounding Windows laptops/desktops, Apple devices including IOS, Microsoft Office 365 and Unified Communications
  • Use a high level understanding of how platforms/architectures interact with business solutions to partner with Enterprise Architecture to evaluate and recommend emerging technologies, and influence technical designs
  • Partners with Technology Team members and business customers to provide advice, support or solutions within his or her area of expertise

Product Support:

  • Responsible for immediate response to production issues including, but not limited to: desktops/laptops, applications and software, network shares, email and virtual desktop presentation services

Task Management:

  • Understand dependency identification process in technology work, verifies information and carefully reviews and checks the accuracy of own work
  • Establishes or follows prioritization processes to drive work and has a sense of urgency about getting work completed
  • Looks for and seizes opportunities to do more or to do things better
  • Analyze and resolve multiple complex problems without direction
  • Research and recommend alternative actions for problem resolution
  • Employ productivity aids in all aspects of assignments

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.


  • BS/BA in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or Information Technology, or other related degree required.


  • 1 year work experience as a System Engineer, Network Engineer or relevant college coursework preferred
  • Understanding of End User support or experience
  • Experience Supporting Windows or Apple devices and OS a plus
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above preferred (either current student or final GPA for student that has graduated)
  • Demonstrated leadership and initiative preferred
  • Project Management skills (principles, timelines and budgets) preferred




Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines.


Core Knowledge:

  • Basic knowledge of system engineering methodologies, practices, concepts, and technologies obtained through formal training and/or work experience.
  • Basic knowledge of operating systems, Windows and Mac, Microsoft Office


Critical Skills:

  • Demonstrated partnering, communication, and negotiation skills working with various Technology or partner Teams.
  • Able to analyze small Business or technical problems, articulating the problem or root cause, and translating the analysis into viable solution recommendations.
  • Able to work effectively in a strong Customer Service/ Team oriented environment.
  • Able to take on multiple assignments, whether administrative or project related, while maintaining a successful level of completion in all responsible work.
  • Able to prioritize effectively.
  • Able to develop, present, and effectively communicate ideas and strategies to a variety of audiences.
  • Fundamental project management skills (including principles, timelines, and budgets) are a plus.
  • Demonstrate programming aptitude and ability for logical and abstract thinking.
  • Facilitate or complete Analysis, design, and implementation of viable and secure solutions to complex business problems.
  • Participate in system and acceptance testing.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Problem solving ability and strong written/verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to stay organized and manage multiple and concurrent assignments under tight deadlines.
  • Works well in a culture that is open, direct, respectful, courteous and compassionate.
  • Quick learner, self-motivated, team oriented, with a sense of humor.


Other Qualifications

  • Limited travel with potential for increased/decreased travel based upon Technology Department needs

Must maintain well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines.


Must be a U.S. Citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
